The trouble with learning inside many organizations today is that it is synonymous with the rote memorization of facts or the passive watching of video content. Like, c'mon.
-
We know that knowledge must be acted upon in the real world in order to be "learned." Otherwise, what's the point?
-
Organizations also seem to misunderstand the purpose of learning.
-
Instead of seeing the strategic value of a workforce that can learn, or the operational benefits of skills liquidity, "learning" is now just a "perk" to help with employee retention — like covered parking or snacks in the break room. What a massive miss! So much more is possible.
-
While I'm whining, there's also far too much confusion about how to connect outputs of learning back to outcomes. "Ah yes, 100 video views." "Is that... good?" "No idea."
-
So... most organizations cannot answer the question, "Are we learning?" Nor can they answer, "Why are we learning?"
-
Just another nail in the coffin.
